SEOUL, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) – “The First Slam Dunk,” an animated sports film based on the legendary Japanese manga series, has not only hit the box office in South Korea but also offline pop-up store that opened at The Hyundai Seoul.

The epic sports comic series “Slam Dunk,” written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, has been proving to be more than just a comic series for those in their 30s and 40s by gathering more than 1 million tickets at the South Korean box office. The legend is continuing at the pop-up store exclusively opened at The Hyundai Seoul, the largest department store in Seoul.

The department store was crowded with fans of “Slam Dunk” who visited the pop-up store; fans waited in lines from around 5 a.m. for an “open-run” (the act of entering and purchasing merchandise as soon as the store is opened), waiting for the store to open at 10:30 a.m.

Hyundai Department Store explained that with up to 30 customers allowed to enter at a time, the store soon had 800 visitors in total, which is the maximum number of people allowed to enter the store in a day.

There were even some fans who waited at the underground passageway of the Yeouido Station that connects to the department store, even from 5 a.m., only to visit the pop-up store.

One visitor who also waited for the “open run” posted on one’s social media account as follows: “I even took a leave to visit the pop-up store; I received the waiting number 140 at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25 and finally made it to the store at 1 p.m. on Jan. 26.”

Hyundai Department Store plans to open the pop-up store for “The First Slam Dunk” on the second basement floor of The Hyundai Seoul until Feb. 7, selling 200 different kinds of original merchandise products (goods), ranging from limited edition figures to uniforms.

The Hyundai Daegu is also planning to open a pop-up store under the same name from Feb. 10 to Feb. 22.

Meanwhile, according to G Market, a South Korean online shopping mall, the number of basketball shoes sold from Jan. 11 to 18 is five times the number sold in the same period last year.
