SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) -- South Gyeongsang province announced on the 2nd that along with the Ministry of Environment, Cultural Heritage Administration and Changnyeong county it would hold a "Upo Crested Ibis Release Event."
Starting from 2019, this event has been held once or twice every year.
This is the 5th year.
The Upo Crested Ibis Restoration Center has been continously monitoring wild crested ibis to find out where they live, their feeding activities, and their migrating routes.
40 (22 females, 18 males) crested ibis are being released this time.
160 Crested Ibis have been released so far.
With 103 animals surviving, the survival rate is 64.3%.
Various information that has been obtained by monitoring the previous crested ibis released was reflected in this release.
The center identified the obstacles to mating during the breeding seasons, and pointed that the crested ibis in Upo has a lack of awareness of wild prey and that the tracking device attached to the female ibis contribute to the obstacles.
Thus, this time, in order to release these crested ibis, they conducted an intensive prey recognition training and had the locators attach to males and only some females.
Changnyeong county plans to create a habitat centered on the haunting area to help the natural settlement of the released crested ibis.
"We hope that through the enhanced training of these released Crested Ibis, they will be able to adapt better in nature," said an official from the province. "Gyeongnam Province will continue to provide continous support for the natural settlement of Crested Ibis."
