SEOUL, Nov. 26 (Yonhap) -- Model-turned-actress Jung Ho-yeon, risen to stardom through Netflix’ mega-hit series "Squid Game," has ended her nine-year relationship with fellow actor Lee Dong-hwi, nine years her senior.
Jung’s agency, Saram Entertainment, confirmed the breakup on Tuesday, stating, "Jung Ho-yeon (30) and Lee Dong-hwi (39) have decided to part ways but remain good colleagues."
Lee Dong-hwi’s agency, Company On, also acknowledged the split.
The couple began dating in 2015 and publicly confirmed their relationship in early 2016. Throughout their time together, they were open about their affection for one another at public events and in interviews.
In a 2021 interview following the success of Squid Game, Jung shared that Lee celebrated her achievements as if they were his own, often telling her, "I’m so proud of you." The following year, Lee expressed his joy on social media when Jung won the SAG Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series.
Lee Dong-hwi gained popularity with his role as the quirky Ryu Dong-ryong in the hit drama "Reply 1988," earning the nickname "salamander" from fans. He has since continued his acting career with roles in projects like "Big Bet" and "Chief Detective 1958."
Jung Ho-yeon, originally known for her distinctive looks and modeling career on "Korea’s Next Top Model," transitioned into acting with her breakout role as Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector and pickpocket in Squid Game. The role catapulted her to international stardom.
Despite ending their long-term relationship, the two stars will reportedly continue to focus on their respective careers while maintaining mutual respect and goodwill.
