SEOUL, Aug. 6 (Yonhap) -- An upcoming film “Free Guy”’s director Shawn Levy and the leading actor Ryan Reynolds picked ‘ordinary’ as the aspect of today’s heroes.
“The film is about an ordinary person turning into a hero,” said Levy on an online interview with the Korean press Friday.
“Most films or games are led by a particular hero. But we focused on the shunned characters who were not noticed by watchers. Our film gives that background characters the voice and power that enable them to influence its surroundings.”
“Free Guy” is a comedy action film in which Guy (Reynolds), a banker who notices that he is a non-player game character, becomes a hero to save the game world in danger of destruction.
There have been movies with a game character as the main role, but “Free Guy” delivers freshness and a meaningful message to the viewers in that its main character, who evolves into a hero by itself, is an NPC (Non-Player Character), a back-up character for the player’s main character.
“When we think of heroes, we come up with a special person turning up to save the day. But, looking back at our daily lives, it is the ordinary people that do those heroic things,” said Reynolds.
“Bravery comes from acknowledging what you fear and heroic stems from ordinary. I think that real heroes are the ones who step out of their comfort zone to help those in need. In that, Guy is a real hero.”
Guy emits positive energy in any given situations, and this shows the director’s philosophy that a hero must be able to see light even in the darkest tunnels.
“Our world is full of complicated and disappointing aspects including the virus situation and political disputes. However, I believe that a hero has to be able to see the bright sides, change himself and ultimately the whole world too,” said Levy.
“What we need today is not sarcasm but facing the world with an optimistic eye.”
The film has many game features such as improvements of jumping and recovery abilities when acquiring items. They said that they have put a lot of effort in reflecting the game features in the film.
Also, the film includes items and images from Marvel characters such as Hulk, Captain America, adding more entertaining features to the story.
“I wanted to realistically express the gamers’ cultures and game backgrounds. Through thorough research and by inquiring game designers and producers, I tried my best to exactly depict those in the screen,” said Levy.
“At the same time, I kept in mind that ‘the final production is a movie,’ so my goal was to make the film also entertaining to game outsiders too. I hope our film could be stress relieving to the watchers.”
“Free Guy,” out of all countries, chose Korea to make its first release on Aug. 11.
