SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Yonhap) -- Daejeon Federation for Environmental Movement announced on Wednesday that they have confirmed that two blackfaced spoonbills, which are natural monuments and endangered species, are passing winter at Ogcheon, Chungcheongbuk-do.
The blackfaced spoonbill, which lived with with the related species, yellow-billed spoonbill, at the mouth of Geumgucheon Stream, is a one-year-old bird born this year, and it is the first time that a blackfaced spoonbill has been observed in Okcheon.
The blackfaced spoonbill is an internationally protected bird in which the International Union for Conservation of Nature classified as vulnerable species, and about 90% of them breed on the west coast of Korea and pass the winters in Southeast Asia and Jeju Island.
Environment Movement predicted that the reason why blackfaced spoonbills, which usually take rests at mud flat, mouth of river, and etc., were found at a small inland river is because they were left out of the pack while moving south.
An official from Environmental Movement said, "We will request the Oakcheon county to install directional sign," adding, "By having regular examinations, we will help spoonbills safely pass the winter and fly to breed."
