SEOUL, Mar. 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korean Shin Ye-eun, who recently garnered international recognition for her role as young Park Yeon-jin in Netflix’s mega-hit revenge thriller series “The Glory,” will show off new charms as a lead in the upcoming period television series.
When asked about the background of joining this brand-new historical drama series as a female lead, the actress replied, “I wanted to be loved” during the online press conference of SBS’s forthcoming Monday-Tuesday series “The Secret Romantic Guesthouse” on Wednesday.
Based on the web novel of the same name, the upcoming mystery melodrama series follows the story of Yoon Dan-oh, the owner of an inn in the Joseon Dynasty, and three scholars who each have their own secrets.
The 25-year-old said, “Dan-oh was the beloved youngest daughter who had nothing to worry about. However, she unexpectedly becomes the breadwinner of her family who has to run and protect her family’s Ihwawon Inn.” She then described her role as “a confident, cheerful, and warm-hearted character.”
“When I first read the script, I thought Dan-oh could be loved by many people, so I chose to take this role with the hope of getting loved at least once,” the actress said. “Dan-oh looks the most like me among the roles I have played so far. But it may actually be me trying to be like her since she is so lovely.”
The actress made herself known by appearing in multiple television series, including “The Glory,” “Revenge of Others,” “Yumi’s Cells Season 2,” and “More Than Friends.” The upcoming series will mark her very first historical drama series. The actress said that she went through multiple rehearsals by recording herself saying the lines to ensure that she does not appear or sound awkward in the upcoming period television series.
“My mindset was completely different for this drama. I used to feel a lot more pressured and even afraid for the previous works, but for this work, I spent more time pondering over how to deliver my lines and character.”
This upcoming mystery rom-com will see Ryeo Un, Kang Hoon, and Jung Gun-joo as the three scholars. Ryeo has been slated to appear as Kang San, a martial art student, while Kang Hoon will appear as an idle scholar Kim Si-yeol. In the meantime, Jeong will play the role of Jeong Yu-ha, a liberal arts student with a broken heart.
Ryeo Un gave a brief introduction to his role, saying, “Kang San will be the Joseon Dynasty’s version of a chic city guy, who is used to being alone and also frigid.”
Then, Kang Hoon introduced his role as “a free-spirited scholar who loves to hang out,” while Jeong Gun-joo said that his role “loves to read but also has hurtful memories.”
Producer Kim Jung-min took the helm of this period rom-com. He said, “As you can guess from the title ‘Secret Romantic Guesthouse,’ our drama will feature the cheerful stories of lively youths from the Joseon Dynasty,” adding, “However, we also poured utmost effort into controlling the overall tone of our work so that it may not only be light-hearted and jolly but to also emanate a slightly heavy vibe, which is one of the charms of period drama series.”
This upcoming period romance series will hit the small screens at 10 p.m. on Mar. 20.
