SEOUL, Oct. 10 (Yonhap) — TvN weekend drama “Little Women” ended happily, closing an eventful 70 billion-won-secret fund case.
According to the data by Nielsen Korea on Oct. 4, the final episode of “Little Women” recorded viewership ratings of 11.1%. This is it’s own highest record.
Murder by Won Sang-a (Uhm Ji-won) was reveled by the testimony of Jin Hwa-young (Choo Ja-hyun), who was believed to be dead, at the last episode.
Won Sang-a, now standing on the brink of a precipice, went out of control, murdering Jang Sa-pyeong (Jang Kwang) who backstabbed her and kidnapping Jin Hwa-young and locking Jin in her basement full of green orchids.
Released on probation for 700 billion won secret fund case with the testimony of Jin, Oh In-Ju boarded on a plane but ran straight to Won’s house when she found out that Jin was in danger.
Oh rescued Jin who was under the water mixed with hydrochloric acid from the sprinkler and fought with Won. Won drowned into the water with hydrochloric acid, not feeling sorry for what she had done until the end.
After all the cases were resolved, Oh In-ju and her sister Oh In-kyung returned to their daily lives, eating together on the table.
Two sisters went on with their lives for the future with calm faces. Oh In-ju decided to live in the apartment within sight of the Han River bequeathed by great auntie and Oh In-kyung to go to America with Ha Jong-ho (Kang Hoon), rejecting the scouting offer.
Youngest sister Oh In-hye (Park Ji-hoo) split 70 billion won with her friend Park Hyo-rin (Jeon Chae-eun) who became its real owner, and sent the money to each sister with a letter, wishing for their happiness.
The drama questioned how a desire for money can shake and make a person sordid.
The quarrel between poor but friendly three sisters and power class family added with mystery increased the immersion level of viewers. Unexpected story unfolded fast in each episode, and gloomy mood throughout the drama increased the tension.
While some said magical orchid solving most of the mystery was unnerving, there was fun in showing new sides of privileged class, who were usually depicted rather too fancy.
Combination of female actors, directors, and author also drew attention.
Author Jeong Seo-Gyeong who wrote movies “Decision to Leave” and “The Handmaiden” and drama Mother, unfolded the truth of a massive case that goes back to Vietnam war with the conflict between evil character and three sisters. Sensible directing of Director Kim Hee-won, who directed Vincenzo and The Crowned Clown, well-paced the heavy storyline.
Female actors contributed to enhancing the completeness of drama. Kim Go-eun, Nam Ji-hyun, and Park Ji-hoo playing three sisters, followed by Uhm Ji-won who played Wonn Sang-a, Choo Ja-yeon who is at the center of the case, and Kim Mi-sook. They added variation by applying sentiments of each character into the mystery drama.
While the drama was praised for its completeness, it was criticized for not considering international perspective carefully when dealing with the Vietnam War.
Lines such as “One Korean soldier killed twenty Vietnamese soldiers” and “Korean soldiers kill 100 Vietnamese per person” caused controversy that it distorted the Vietnam War, and Netflix stopped showing in Vietnam.
