SEOUL, Sep. 17 (Yonhap) -- As the Korean films made a head start amid the COVID-19 pandemic, they secured the mid-summer cinema.
The number of moviegoers in August were 7.91 million and the total sales were 76.4 billion won, according to Korea Film Council’s monthly figures for August Friday. The moviegoers were 10.5% (920,000 people) and the sales were 1.1% (800 million won) lesser than last year’s same month.
As films such as “Escape from Mogadishu,” “Sinkhole” and “Hostage” recorded a hit, the Korean movies occupied 76.1% which is more than 45.7% compared to last month outrunning foreign movies for the first time this year.
“Mogadishu” which ranked No.1 in August with 2.56 million audiences was the first this year’s film to have exceeded 3 million total audiences and “Sinkhole” and “Hostage” continued the streak with 2.02 million and 1.21 million respectively.
Foreign films, “The Suicide Squad” and “Free Guy” ranked 4th and 5th with 420,000 and 30,000 audiences respectively.
