SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- “Top Gun: Maverick” starring Tom Cruise is showing signs of resurfacing due to the power of word of mouth, and enthusiasts.

According to the integrated network of movie tickets by the Korean Film Council on Tuesday, base on the data collected at 3:30 p.m. “Top Gun: Maverick” hit 31.5 percent on the reservation rate whereas “Thor: Love and Thunder” hit 23.5 percent taking back its crown.

“Top Gun: Maverick” which was released four weeks ago handed over its place in Korean box office to “Thor Love and Thunder”. Eventually, “Top Gun: Maverick” caught up to “Thor: Love and Thunder” reservation rate.

Even before its release “Top Gun: Maverick” received almost a full marks on its reviews from the critics, which is a rare occasion for a Hollywood blockbuster. After the premier, it expanded its fan base from 40s and 50s who remembers its previous film “Top Gun” from 1986 to people in their 20s and 30s qualifying for long term success.

According to the data collected by CGV, up until noon of the day of premier, 32.3 percent of the audiences were those in their 40s. However, positive reviews of “Top Gun: Maverick” traveled through word of mouth quickly which led the huge increase in audiences in their 30s, total of 30.4 percent.

Especially, usage of special theaters such as 4DX and Screen X, to simulate similar in flight experience, attracts a lot of audiences to revisit the theater.

Analyzed data by CGV showed, after the first week of its release audience who revisited the theater to watch “Top Gun: Maverick” totaled up at 3.3 percent were as people who visited to watch the movie for the third time totaled up at 0.8 percent. After a week of its premier the total of audiences who revisited the theater to watch the movie again accumulated at 4.1 percent, surpassing other Hollywood blockbusters such as Jurassic World: Dominion, which recorded 2.2 percent, and “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of the madness”, which recorded 3.1 percent revisit rate.

Relocation of multiplex’s special pavilion from “Thor: Love and Thunder” to “Top Gun: Maverick” will further the success of “Top Gun: Maverick”.

Starting on Wednesday, CGV will screen total of 2 to 5 rounds of “Top Gun: Maverick” per day excluding the IMAX theater

Out of total 4.754 million audiences of “Top Gun: Maverick”, around about 715 thousand audiences, 15.0 percent, used special cinemas such as IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, Dollby Atmos cinema, and more to watch the movie. “Thor: Love and Thunder” which accumulated around 1.867 million viewers in total, only had about 12.4 percent of audiences used special cinemas to see the movie.

However, as the Hollywood blockbusters are taking over the movie industry, some of the critics are showing their concerns that small indie films, medium scale movies and more are losing their opportunities to meet their audiences. “Thor: Love and Thunder”, and “Top Gun : Maverick” took up total of 76.9 percent of total movie tickets sold on Monday.

In fact, starting with the first episode of "Alienoid" will premier on July 20, as 13 of the movies will premier in between Wednesday and Thursday. Unfortunately most of these movies couldn’t get hold of the screen so there is a high chance of being pulled down from the screen after a week or two of screening.

“Increasing demand on ‘popcorn movie’ is worsening the situation of production companies where rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.” announced, one of the production companies which are premiering a movie on Wednesday.

‘We will consider providing more chances to experience various types of movies premiering this week.” Announced one of the multiplexes official.
