SEOUL, Aug. 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korean action film "Escape from Mogadishu," directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, surpassed 1 million viewers after the first week of its release, making it the top box office hit in 2021.
"The film accumulated over 1 million viewers as of 4 p.m. on the seventh day of its release," announced the film's distribution company Lotte Entertainment on Tuesday.
As a result, "Mogadishu" became the highest box office hit and the first movie to hit 1 million viewers in the pandemic-hit theaters this year, beating "Hard Hit" with 951,000 viewers.
The fourth wave of the novel coronavirus has not abated, and while the government placed Seoul under Level 4 social distancing measures and Level 3 in other areas, "Mogadishu" has still been able to maintain its status as the box office hit.
"Mogadishu," based on a true story of North and South Korean officials’ escape from Somalia during the civil war in 1991, topped the box office upon its release on July 28, attracting more than 126,000 viewers and have accounted for within 50% of the total ticket sales.
During the second week after its release, “Mogadishu” succeeded in the 'word of mouth' marketing strategy as it attracted a larger audience (125,000 viewers) than that of the first week (89,000 viewers).
