SEOUL, Aug. 13 (Yonhap) -- Director Ryoo Seung-wan's new film "Mogadishu" has surpassed 2 million viewers 17 days after its release.

According to distributor Lotte Entertainment on the 13th, "Mogadishu" recorded a cumulative audience of  over 2 million at noon.

Earlier, "Mogadishu" surpassed 1 million viewers on the seventh day of its release on Aug. 3, making it one of the most successful Korean films released this year.

The movie, inspired by the escape story of diplomatic officials from South and North Korea during the 1991 civil war in Somalia, was released amid the fourth wave of COVID-19 and maintained resumed Level 4 social distancing rules in Seoul.

Director Ridley Scott, who directed the film "Black Hawk Down" (2002) about the civil war in Somalia, told the production company that the story of "Mogadishu" was worth being showcased for. "It was an excellent choice to release the film at a time when there is chaos around the world."

In commemoration of the 2 million-viewer mark, "Mogadishu" organized an event to give canned perilla leaves, which was used as an important prop in the scene where people from both North and South Korea ate together for the first time in the movie.

The event will be held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall, Lotte Cinema World Tower, and Megabox COEX on the 15th.
