SEOUL, May 5 (Yonhap) – “For me, ‘Monstrous’ is a work as well as a challenge that I was able to make new category as an actor ‘Yong-joo.’
Actor Kwak Dong-yeon (25), who played role of a troublemaker Kwak Yong-joo in TVING original series ‘Monstrous,’ shared his thoughts as such in a video interview on the 4th.
‘Monstrous,’ written by director Yeon Sang-ho, is a supernatural thriller portraying a confusion of people who fell into their own world of hell, after making an eye contact with cursed statue of Buddha.
Kwak Dong-yeon, mostly playing villain roles including characters such as Jang Han-seo, a supercilious head of the company in drama “VINCENZO,” and a plagiarist painter Nua in drama “Our Beloved Summer,” brought some freshness to the audience by playing a role Kwak Yong-joo in “Monstrous,” a character who depicts ‘pure evil.’
Kwak Yong-joo, a character who burst into laugh at a sudden disaster taking place in the village, jumps into the chaos and kills people in full joy. The character is said to have been expressed more attractively through Kwak Dong-yeon’s mad eyes and grotesque smile.
In terms of his role, Kwak explained, “Being born in an unstable family, Yong-joo is a person whose ego has been created in an environment exposed to severe linguistic and physical violence. He was originally problematic, and as he grew up in such environment, his sense of values became distorted irrevocably.”
However, he asserted that the unfortunate narrative of Yong-joo should not be used to rationalize his misdeeds.
“Since there are people who grow up well while overcoming negative environments, I do not want to rationalize that it was inevitable for Yong-joo to grow as such. It is just that a person born to be distorted unfortunately encounters the situation that can make his nature, like a time bomb, explode faster than expected. Especially, I hope that scenes which depict Yong-joo’s violence would not be intended to display provocative words or languages.
In the meantime, Kwak said that above all the characters in ‘Monstrous,’ the top villain is not Yong-joo, but a mayor Kwon Jong-soo (starring Park Ho-san), explaining, “He is an adult, and supposed to be responsible for people’s safety when emergency happens, but Kwon only thinks of himself. Considering the age and social status, I think the mayor would be the top villain.”
When asked about a feeling of joining ‘Yeoniverse (Yeon Sang-ho’s Universe),’ Kwak, originally interested in Occult genre, said that “It was a great pleasure to work with director Yeon, since I’ve seen his previous works with so much fun. My name is Kwak Dong-‘yeon’ as well, so it feels like I am qualified for joining ‘Yeoniverse.’
