The current law in South Korea states that, if a person dies without a will, the person’s parents are automatically entitled to the child’s property, solely based on biological ties and regardless of whether the parent was ever involved in raising the child.
This is what prompted the brother of late K-pop singer Goo Hara to start a petition to create the so-called “Goo Hara Act,” which aims to disqualify family members from inheriting a deceased person’s assets, if they were negligent of their duties as parents or children. 
As the bill awaiting to be reviewed by the 21st National Assembly, a similar incident was reported of an estranged mother who came forward to claim her late daughter’s financial assets, after 28 years of being out of her daughter’s life. Watch the video to learn more.
