Lee vows support for video game industry to foster as key cultural sector

By Kim Eun-jung

SEOUL, Oct. 15 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung said Wednesday the video gaming industry is a key pillar of the cultural sector and a source of youth employment, pledging active policy support for game developers and content creators.

Lee made the remarks during a meeting with senior executives of local video game companies as part of his broader initiatives to foster cultural and entertainment industries as new engines for economic growth.

"We should not view the gaming industry as merely a source of addiction but should nurture it as a key cultural industry that drives youth employment and exports," Lee said during the meeting at PUBG Seongsu, a cultural space for Krafton's battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds. "The role of the government is not to suppress, but to create opportunities."

He stressed that the benefits of the thriving video gaming industry should also reach young employees.

"Companies would be pleased when a game succeeds, boosting sales and profits," he said. "But my concern is whether the young employees involved in research, development, and management can also share in those benefits."

Lee said the government would shift from its past regulation-focused approach to one that provides policy support, positioning the gaming industry as a key driver for the cultural sector's expansion into global markets.

"The gaming industry is not merely a form of entertainment but an early form of the cultural industry and a foundation for Korea's growth into a global cultural powerhouse," he said. "It is time for the government to change its policy direction and actively support the cultural industry, especially the gaming sector, so that it can expand globally."
