Minor party unveils draft impeachment motion against top court justice

By Yi Wonju

SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Yonhap) -- The minor Rebuilding Korea Party (RKP) released a draft motion calling for the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae on Friday, accusing him of alleged election interference.

Cho Kuk, leader of the party's emergency leadership committee, unveiled the draft at the National Assembly, saying the top court chief justice's impeachment is necessary to "restore public trust" in the judiciary.

"The Rebuilding Korea Party will uncover the truth regarding the Supreme Court's collusion with the insurrection forces and hold those responsible accountable," Cho said.

The top court chief justice is accused of allegedly interfering in the June 3 presidential election after the Supreme Court overturned a not-guilty verdict in President Lee Jae Myung's election law violation case and sent it back to a lower court just ahead of the election.

The impeachment motion accuses the chief justice of violating the right to a fair trial and the duty of political neutrality.

The ruling Democratic Party, which has pursued a series of legislative reforms and openly criticized the chief justice, however, distanced itself from the RKP's move, saying it is not currently considering an impeachment motion against him.

An impeachment motion requires the support of at least one-third of National Assembly members to be introduced and a majority vote to pass the Assembly. With only 12 seats, the RKP cannot propose the motion on its own.
