Vice FM, new top Indonesian envoy discuss APEC summit, bilateral cooperation

By Kim Seung-yeon

SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Yonhap) -- First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo met with new Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Cecep Herawan on Wednesday and discussed the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, the foreign ministry said.

Park expressed hope that the two sides will expand exchanges and cooperation across political, economic, security and international areas, the ministry said in a release.

"Both sides also agreed to maintain close communication to ensure the successful hosting of the Korea-ASEAN summit and the APEC summit," it said.

ASEAN stands for the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including Indonesia and the summit with South Korea is scheduled to take place later this year.

Park also briefed Herawan on the Lee government's peace efforts toward North Korea and asked for Indonesia's continued support in this regard.

Herawan, who served as the deputy chief of mission to Seoul from 2014-17, expressed his special affection for his host country and pledged to do his best as the new top envoy to further elevate the bilateral partnership.
