SEOUL, May 13 (Yonhap) -- Annika Sorenstam (51, Sweden), who has won 72 LPGA Tour titles, will participate in the US Senior Women's Open, which will open in July this year.
The U.S. golf media Golf Channel reported on the 13th that "Annika Sorenstam has signed up for the U.S. Senior Women's Open this summer."
Sorenstam, who won 10 major championships alone including three-time U.S. championships, retired in 2008 and played on the Gainbridge LPGA in March this year, 13 years after her retirement.
By the second round, she competed with young players in their 20s by making a two-over 146 strokes and making the cut.
"When I finished that round at Interlachen, I’m not sure I would have expected to compete for another USGA title in the future, but to have this opportunity now, at this stage of life, is incredible," Sorenstam said. "I am looking forward to the opportunity to compete, and to do it with my family by my side."
Sorenstam was elected president of the International Golf Federation at the end of last year.
She will also compete in the European Women's Professional Golf Tour (LET) in Sweden in June. The competition, dubbed the Scandinavian Mixed, is a mixed men's and women's competition co-hosted by Sorenstam and Henrik Stenson (Sweden).
This year's U.S. Senior Women's Open will be held for four days from July 29 at the Brooklyn Country Club in Fairfield, Connecticut.
