What if you say no to military service in South Korea?

Whenever a K-pop star or other celebrity starts their military service, it becomes news – though of course all able-bodied South Korean men have to do their time of at least 18 months. But what happens if they simply refuse? Well, for a long time the answer was prison. But in 2018, the Supreme Court said religious and conscientious beliefs are considered valid reasons for refusing military service. Until last week, nearly 950 Jehovah’s Witnesses had gained state approval for alternative service. But what about other conscientious objectors?
