SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- K-pop boy band Seventeen debuted at No. 15 with their latest EP 'Your Choice' on the Billboard 200, a weekly-updated album chart in the U.S.
Billboard announced on social media that Seventeen's 8th mini album 'Your Choice', which was released on the 18th, ranked at No. 15 on June 28th (local time).
The Billboard 200 rankings have been updated on the 29th (local time).
Seventeen, which marks its seventh year since its debut, has been taking over the Asian market including countries like Japan. Although the group is already a top-ranking K-pop group in terms of album sales and fandom size, it is the first time that it has entered the U.S. Billboard main chart.
The first time ranking is especially notable in that the team went straight to the top 15th position on the chart, showing the influence its expansion to the North American market has.
In the Billboard Music Awards held in May, Seventeen was nominated for the Top Social Artist category along with K-pop superstars BTS and Blackpink.
To promote the release of their new album, they have been actively targeting the global market by performing on popular American television shows.
The group performed "Ready to Love", their main track of its latest album, on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and MTV's "Fresh Out Live".
Meanwhile, Chairman Bang Si-hyuk and other producers from Hybe participated in making the album since Seventeen's agency Pledis Entertaniment became part of Hybe Labels.
"We hope to make it to the Billboard main charts, even once," group member Seungkwan said in a news conference held on the 18th (KST). "We would be thrilled to even see our name on the chart," added S.Coups.
'Your Choice' also topped the album sales with 1.36 million sales in the first week of release, placing them as No. 1 among other artists on initial-week sales. It became the fourth million-seller for the group, following its 2019 album 'An Ode', and 2020 albums 'Heng:garae' and 'Semicolon'.
As K-pop groups are gaining more fans across America, more and more groups are debuting at a high rank on the Billboard charts.
Rookie K-pop boy bands Enhypen showed surprising results when their second album debuted at No. 18 on the charts, and TXT landed on No. 5 with their latest album. K-pop girl group Twice also entered the charts at No. 6 with their mini album, which was released this month.
