'12.12: The Day' reaches break-even point over weekend
SEOUL, Dec. 4 (Yonhap) -- "12.12: The Day," a historical saga about South Korea's military coup in 1979, attracted more than 1.7 million moviegoers over the weekend, data showed Monday, reaching its break-even point less than 2 weeks after its opening.
The cumulative ticket sales of the title have topped the break-even point of 4.6 million, data from the Korean Film Council showed.
Since its release on Nov. 22, the film has been rapidly gaining popularity, reaching the 1 million sales mark on its fourth day and 3 million sales mark on the 10th day.
Also more tickets were sold on the second weekend than on the first weekend, thanks to rave reviews from critics and viewers alike, a possible signal that it is on the path to becoming a mega-hit film with more than 10 million ticket sales.
Inspired by real events, the film recounts the heart-pounding nine hours of confrontation between Chun Doo-kwang, head of the Defense Security Command, who orchestrates a military coup to seize power on Dec. 12, 1979, and Capital Defense Cdr. Lee Tae-shin who risks everything to oppose the coup.
