S. Korea's climate ambassador to attend COP29 next week as presidential envoy
SEOUL, Nov. 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's envoy for climate and environmental affairs will attend a multilateral conference on climate change in Azerbaijan next week as the special presidential envoy, the foreign ministry said Friday.
Cho Hong-sik, ambassador-at-large for climate and environmental affairs, will visit Baku for the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) summit, scheduled for Nov. 11-22, the ministry said.
At the summit, Cho will participate in the review of the previous COP28's past achievements related to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and highlight the need for countries to actively establish their goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emission.
Cho also plans to deliver South Korea's commitment to expanding its support for climate change responses in developing countries.
Top government officials from some 90 countries, including Britain, Germany and Turkey, are expected to be present, as well as Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, according to the Seoul ministry.
