Top judges to convene Sept. 12 to discuss DP's judicial reform bills

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- The Supreme Court plans to hold an extraordinary meeting of the heads of courts across the country next week to discuss judicial reform plans pushed by the ruling Democratic Party (DP), court officials said Friday.

The special meeting of the nation's top court judges will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the Supreme Court in southern Seoul, they said, as the DP has been speeding up the parliamentary passage of judicial reform bills.

The DP has vowed to pass its five-point judicial reform package, including a controversial bill to more than double the number of Supreme Court justices from the current 14 to 30, ahead of this year's extended Chuseok holiday, which begins on Oct. 6.

The package also includes measures to overhaul the recommendation of Supreme Court justices and the evaluation system for judges, expand public access to lower-court rulings and introduce preexamination of search and seizure warrants.

The Supreme Court is expected to put forth the judiciary's official opinion on the reform bills through the upcoming meeting of top justices. To this end, the top court has reportedly asked all courts nationwide to collect the opinions of judges.
