Lee offers condolences to victims of deadly Lisbon funicular crash

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Friday extended condolences to the victims of a funicular railway crash in Lisbon that killed at least 16 people, including two South Koreans.

Lee posted the message on Facebook after the foreign ministry confirmed two Korean nationals were killed and another was seriously injured in the railway incident in Portugal on Wednesday.

"I pray for the repose of our citizen and all the victims who lost their lives in the Lisbon funicular derailment," Lee wrote. "I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Portugal, who must be in profound sorrow and shock, and I wish a swift recovery for the injured."

Lee said the Korean Embassy in Portugal formed a task force immediately after the accident, with the ambassador checking the situation on site. He added that the government will convey condolences to the Portuguese prime minister and request special support for Korean nationals.

"(The government) will always put the safety of our people first, and take all necessary responsibilities and measures," he said.
