PM says infrastructure for APEC summit likely to be completed by end-month

By Lee Haye-ah

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said Friday that infrastructure for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju will likely be completed by the end of this month.

Kim made the remark while presiding over the eighth meeting of the APEC preparatory committee, with the summit less than two months away on Oct. 31 in the ancient city 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

"It appears that the APEC summit is now within sight," he said. "The infrastructure will likely be completed by mid-September, or late September at the latest. I ask the ministries particularly responsible for the infrastructure to really do their best to leave nothing amiss."

Kim also called for special attention on various cultural programs that will be held on the sidelines and operating an on-site situation room closer to the date to better check preparations.

"International interest in APEC is growing, and considering various circumstances following the last South Korea-U.S. summit, I think the level of interest and scale are growing even further," he said.

The APEC summit has been floated as a venue for a possible meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, after President Lee Jae Myung raised the idea during his summit with Trump in Washington last month.
