Lee's approval rating inches up for 2 straight weeks: poll
By Yi Wonju
SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating reached 63 percent ahead of his 100th day in office, a poll showed Friday, driven by positive feedback of his recent summits with U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
In a Gallup Korea survey of 1,002 adults conducted Tuesday through Thursday, 63 percent gave a positive evaluation of Lee's performance, up 4 percentage points from the previous week.
His approval rating rose for two consecutive weeks after hitting a record low of 56 percent in the third week of August, partly due to his special pardons for several controversial political figures last month.
Among respondents with a positive view, 18 percent cited Lee's diplomacy, followed by the economy at 13 percent and overall performance at 9 percent.
Negative assessment of Lee fell 2 percentage points to 28 percent.
Lee, who is set to mark his 100th day in office next Thursday, recorded the third-highest approval rating among presidents at the same milestone, trailing behind former President Kim Young-sam at 83 percent and former President Moon Jae-in at 78 percent.
The ruling Democratic Party's approval rating stood at 41 percent, down 3 percentage points from the previous week, while the main opposition People Power Party added 1 percentage point to 24 percent.
The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
