Defense chief urges tightened discipline after military accidents

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back on Friday urged the military to tighten discipline in a meeting with key commanders, following a string of accidents at the military, including the recent death of an officer involving firearms

Ahn made the call just days after the body of an Army officer was found with a gunshot wound, raising questions over the military's firearms management system.

Earlier this year, the Air Force was involved in a mistaken bombing of a civilian town and a fighter jet accident during U.S.-led multinational drills held in Alaska.

"This meeting was urgently organized to sternly analyze the cause and prevent links to accidents that have consecutively occurred," Ahn told participants that included key commanders of the defense ministry and the military.

Ahn called on commanders to stay vigilant of the smallest incidents and resolve lax discipline issues within the military by launching a strict system.

Attending the meeting were key commanders, including the chiefs of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force and the deputy commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command who were appointed earlier this week.
