Arms agency chief, Saudi officials discuss defense cooperation

SEOUL, Sept. 5 (Yonhap) -- The head of South Korea's arms procurement agency met with government officials in Saudi Arabia earlier this week to discuss bilateral cooperation in the defense sector, officials said Friday.

Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) Minister Seok Jong-gun visited Saudi Arabia from Wednesday to Thursday in a trip aimed at exploring ways to help South Korean defense firms' participation in Saudi's project to enhance its defense capabilities.

On Wednesday, Seok met with Ahmad Abdulaziz Al-Ohali, governor of Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Military Industries, as the Middle Eastern country seeks to modernize ground equipment in a bid to increase its defense power.

Seok said South Korean defense firms have an intent to join the Middle Eastern country's efforts to expand the localized production of key military equipment.

The DAPA chief also held talks with Khaled bin Hussein Al-Biyari, Saudi Arabia's assistant minister of defense for executive affairs, on the same day to discuss cooperation in a range of areas, including ground equipment, warships, fighter jets, air defense and artificial intelligence.
