Special counsel searches PPP floor leader's office in martial law probe
SEOUL, Sept. 4 (Yonhap) -- A special counsel team searched the office of the People Power Party (PPP) floor leader Thursday over former floor leader Choo Kyung-ho's alleged involvement in ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol's botched martial law bid, legal sources said.
According to the sources, special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team raided the office at the National Assembly in cooperation with the main opposition party, a day before the search warrant was set to expire.
It marked the team's third attempt to carry out the search, following attempts on Tuesday and Wednesday, which were blocked by PPP lawmakers.
The special counsel is looking into allegations that Choo obstructed PPP lawmakers from taking part in a vote to lift Yoon's martial law declaration on Dec. 3 by changing the venue of an emergency meeting of lawmakers multiple times that night at Yoon's request.
On Wednesday, the team told reporters Yoon had held discussions about martial law since March last year, raising the possibility of Choo being aware of the plan before its declaration.
Choo has denied such allegations, saying he did not intend to block the lifting of martial law nor was he aware of such a plan.
Earlier this week, the special counsel separately raided Choo's homes and offices.
