SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Yonhap) -- The ruling People Power Party (PPP) appointed 12 members to sit on its innovation committee Thursday, four days after the surprise appointment of Doctor Ihn Yohan of American descent as its chair.
The members, consisting of seven women and six men, include one sitting lawmaker and 11 outside figures, such as a former TV anchor and a startup executive. Their recruitment was approved in a party leadership meeting later in the day, the PPP said.
"I took into consideration women, people of a younger age and the youth who will become our next generation. We tried to bring in as many people from outside the party," Ihn said in a press conference.
"I will formulate and administer the bitter medicine that we must take, so that people can feel refreshed as we find the right path," he added.
The PPP began the formation of the innovation committee last week, in a bid to reform the party and gain back trust from voters following its crushing defeat in a local by-election in Seoul.
On Monday, it made the surprise decision to appoint Ihn as the committee's chairman.
The naturalized doctor has pledged to bring about huge changes to the PPP and promote national unity.
