Six-term lawmaker declares bid for main opposition leader

SEOUL, July 21 (Yonhap) -- A six-term lawmaker of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Monday declared his bid for the conservative party's new leader.

Rep. Cho Kyung-tae made the announcement during a press conference at the National Assembly, vowing to make a sweeping personnel overhaul of the party following the ouster of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid.

"Only a bold personnel reshuffle can bring the People Power Party back," he said.

"There is no future for our party and the conservative block unless we break away from the old forces that have thrown us into crisis and are still holding onto their vested interests."

He pledged to form a permanent reform committee consisting of citizens to ensure that the party's reform meets public expectations.

The PPP is scheduled to pick its next leader during a national convention on Aug. 22.
