Veterans ministry vows to draw up measures for nat'l cemetery flooding

SEOUL, July 17 (Yonhap) -- The veterans ministry plans to draw up comprehensive measures to respond to flooding at some national cemeteries that have damaged urns carrying the remains of veterans laid to rest, a senior ministry official said Thursday.

Vice Veterans Minister Kang Yun-jin made the remark as torrential rains have pounded parts of the country's central regions this week, killing two and prompting about 1,000 residents to evacuate.

"Due to heavy rains that started Wednesday, we have held discussions over the situation at 12 national cemeteries across the country," Kang told reporters, adding that no major damage has been reported.

"We are preparing measures to honor fallen veterans and prevent causing distress to their families," she said, mentioning procedures, such as measuring precipitation and better sealing the urns.

A number of urns that had been kept at some national cemeteries were recently found to have gotten damp due to insufficient sealing.
