Hanjin Group chief stresses full Korean Air-Asiana integration in New Year's message

SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- Cho Won-tae, chairman of logistics and airline conglomerate Hanjin Group, on Monday emphasized the importance of fully integrating Korean Air Co. and Asiana Airlines Inc. to strengthen the group's global competitiveness.

"Now Hanjin Group's rivals are in the global market," Cho said in a New Year's message. "We have to expand our horizons and reform ourselves to compete on the world stage."

Cho said the group is expanding its global presence as its flagship carrier, Korean Air, whose merger with Asiana Airlines is under way, is poised to become one of the world's leading airlines, operating a combined fleet of 240 aircraft.

He stressed that complete integration of the two carriers will serve as a catalyst for the group's global expansion.

"We may face differences among ourselves and unexpected challenges amid rapid changes," Cho said. "I believe we can become one company, united by our determination to contribute to the development of the Korean economy through transportation."
