Trump says U.S. captured Venezuelan leader Maduro in large-scale strike

By Song Sang-ho

WASHINGTON, Jan. 3 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday the United States has conducted a successful and "large-scale" strike against Venezuela, and captured its leader Nicolas Maduro, capping his administration's monthslong pressure campaign against the Maduro regime.

In a social media post, Trump made the announcement on the operation against Maduro, whom his administration has accused of drug trafficking. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described the Maduro administration as a "narco-terrorist" regime.

"The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement," he added.

Trump plans to hold a news conference on the matter at 11 a.m. (local time), he said.
