Seoul foreign ministry holds meeting to review Venezuelan crisis

SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Yonhap) -- The foreign ministry held a meeting with the South Korean Embassy in Venezuela on Monday to assess the safety of its nationals living in the South American country following a U.S. military strike, officials said.

The meeting, chaired by Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina, came after the United States captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife in their country in a large-scale military strike.

The ministry said no casualties involving South Korean nationals in Venezuela had been reported as of 9 p.m. Monday.

Kim instructed the embassy to maintain close communication and to thoroughly prepare evacuation and withdrawal plans for South Korean nationals in case the situation deteriorates further.

The vice minister also urged South Koreans currently in Venezuela to leave the country as soon as commercial flights resume and advised those planning to travel to the country to cancel or postpone their trips.
