SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- Director Lee Chang-dong's film "No Other Choice" has received three nominations at the Gotham Awards, a U.S. awards ceremony honoring independent films.
According to the Gotham Awards website Tuesday, "No Other Choice" was nominated for Best International Feature, Best Screenplay and Outstanding Lead Performance at the 36th Gotham Awards.
Lee Chang-dong and screenwriter Oh Jung-mi were nominated for Best Screenplay, while lead actress Jeon Do-yeon is vying for the Outstanding Lead Performance award.
The Netflix film "No Other Choice" follows a laid-off worker and his wife and a documentary filmmaker couple who become entangled through the production of a film, confronting their different lives and hidden desires.
The film is Lee's first work in eight years since "Burning" (2018) and stars Jeon Do-yeon, Sol Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Jo Yeo-jeong.
"No Other Choice" was invited to the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in September, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was also screened at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival and the 31st Busan International Film Festival.
The film opened in South Korean theaters on Sept. 23 and will be released on Netflix on Nov. 6.
The Gotham Awards recognize original and experimental works. The Best International Feature category was established in 2020.
Last year, director Park Chan-wook's "No Other Choice" received three nominations, including Best International Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay, while Lee Byung-hun was nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance.
This year's awards ceremony will be held Nov. 30 in New York City.
