SEOUL, September 29 (Yonhap) -- As OTT stands along with television as a content supply chain, it is pouring out reality shows.
According to the OTT industry on Thursday, Netflix and Disney Plus are presenting their original reality shows in the second half of this year.
Starting in September, Disney Plus has been releasing new episodes of their reality program "The Zone: Survival Mission," which depicts Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kwang-soo, and Kwon Yu-ri staying in extreme situations where zombies are attacking, and many more threats to humanity, and having to stay there for four hours.
When other reality shows concentrate on "escaping," and completing the missions, "The Zone: Survival Mission" changed the goal to endure in the situation. The concept of the show was adapted from COVID-19, which the entire world went through.
It became a hot topic as the show will be showing the collaboration of "Running Man" original members Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo. "The Zone: Survival Mission" showed great response internationally, as "Running Man" was popular in Asian countries.
Jo Hyo-jin producer said during the interview held on September 27, "People are showing greater response as more episodes are released" and "The cast representing normal people making laughter and trying to hold on to their situation might have made the audience comforted and be able to relate to their situation."
Disney Plus will be releasing their first dating reality show, "Pink Lie," on October 5.
"Pink Lie" is a program that observes the process of a man and a woman who lie living together and find love. The cast of the show can only lie about one fact they want to hide.
"Netflix" will be releasing the second season of "Singles Inferno," which was popular earlier. The shooting for the show is finished, and they are in the process of studio shooting and concluding the edits.
Netflix will also be releasing the music reality show "Take 1," a music entertainment show featuring world-famous soprano Sumi Jo, Lim Jae-bum, Park Jung-hyun, Rain, Akdong Musician, and Mamamoo creating a "dream stage," "Physical:100," a survival program of 100 men and women who are confident with their bodies, and "Korea Number One" in which Yoo Jae-suk, Lee Kwang-soo, and Kim Yeon-kyung seek craftsmen from all over Korea.
As OTTs are releasing many entertainment programs, interest is also focused on whether K-entertainment will be able to create a global hit.
Jeong Deok-hyeon, a culture critic said, "It is vital to add global minds in order to make a success of a reality show in OTT," and added, "The local color should be maintained, but we also have to find the point where everyone can vibe to internationally."
