SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) – With “Avatar: The Way of Water” securing its first place at the South Korean box office chart, an array of animated films is expected to hold an impressive performance.
An acclaimed Japanese comic illustrator Takehiko Inoue’s animated film “The First Slam Dunk” and Dreamwork’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” both released on Wednesday, are performing well by each sitting at No. 3 and No. 4 at the box office, according to data released by the Korean Film Council.
As a Japanese animated sports film based on the Slam Dunk manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, “The First Slam Dunk” has been witnessing an increase in the number of admissions, especially among those in their 30s and 40s, over the past few days. The movie is expected to garner even more numbers during the weekend.
Inoue’s film, as it retells one of the masterpiece animes from the ’90s, scored a 13.2 percent reservation rate, sitting right next to “Avatar: The Way of Water” scoring 51.8 percent. The movie has been manifesting the power of anime, especially in Japan where the anime originated, as the movie is going over and beyond James Cameron’s “Avatar” by topping the box office in Japan.
The sequel spin-off movie of the beloved cat from “Shrek,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is also witnessing an increase in admissions among moviegoers who are looking for a movie to watch with their family and friends during the holiday season.
Meanwhile, James Cameron’s sequel to the sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” is reaching another milestone in Korea, as it made another 91 thousand admissions yesterday, accumulating a total of 8.184 million in total.
As the movie has been garnering about 100 thousand admissions every weekend, the record-breaking movie may be breaking another record by reaching a total of 9 million admissions.
