LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Yonhap) – Over-the-top(OTT) media service Netflix announced on June 14(U.S. Time) that it will hold an actual "Squid Game" competition with nearly 6 billion won in prize money.

Netflix announced through Twitter on Tuesday that it will produce a reality competition program called "Squid Game: The Challenge,” where contestants compete for $4.56 million (5.88 billion won) in prize money based on the story of a South Korean series "Squid Game.”

Netflix emphasized that it is set to offer the largest cash prize and the largest cast in reality TV history.

It will feature a series of games inspired by the original show “Squid Game” as well as surprising new additions provided by Netflix.

English-language speakers from any part of the world can apply for the program through the online website (SquidGameCasting.com).

Netflix said, "Unlike the story of the original series, contestants will not get hurt," adding, "The worst fate is going home empty-handed."

“Squid Game: The Challenge” will be made into 10 episodes.

The show will be filmed in the UK and produced by television production companies Studio Lambert and The Garden.

Brandon Riegg, Netflix VP of Unscripted and Documentary Series, said, “’Squid Game’ took the world by storm with Director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s captivating story and iconic imagery,” adding, “We’re grateful for his support as we turn the fictional world into reality in this massive competition and social experiment.”

He also mentioned, “Fans of the drama series are in for a fascinating and unpredictable journey as our 456 real world contestants navigate the biggest competition series ever, full of tension and twists, with the biggest ever cash prize at the end.”

“Squid Game” is a drama that depicts the story of contestants competing in a series of survival games to earn 45.6 billion won, and it became Netflix’s most popular show of all time upon its release in 2021.

Bloomberg News analyzed that Netflix is seeking to recover its subscribers with the "Squid Game" franchise, which has confirmed the production of season 2 along with the reality show.

Netflix announced in April that the number of paid subscribers in the first quarter decreased by 200,000 compared to the fourth quarter of last year.
