SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korean comedy film “Count,” toplined by Jin Sun-kyu, has touched down in second place on the domestic box office chart on its very first day of release.

The comedy flick scored in second place by gathering more than 38,000 moviegoers Wednesday, according to data released by the Korean Film Council Thursday.

“Count,” which is based on the anecdote of South Korean boxer Park Si-heon, tells the story of Si-heon (Jin Sun-kyu), who turns into a physical education teacher in his hometown after going through an argument over a referee’s call.

The mystery-thriller “Searching” and the Korean-made mystery-horror film “Marui Video,” which hit the big screens on the same day as Jin’s “Count,” accumulated more than 36,000 and 21,000 admissions, sitting in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

A 2022 psychological drama film “Tar,” starring Cate Blanchett, opened in eighth place by having more than 3,000 viewers.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studio’s latest “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which depicts an imaginative odyssey into the Quantum Realm and opens up a new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, gathered another 56,000 moviegoers on Wednesday and secured its first place. Paul Rudd’s “Ant-Man 3” already surpassed 1 million admissions in South Korea as of Wednesday.
