SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- By 2025, nine areas with tidal flats, also called "getbol" in Korean, are planned to be added in South Korea's "Getbol, Korean Tidal Flats" property, which has been officially inscribed as UNESCO's world natural heritage in July.
On Wednesday, the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) held a ceremony to commemorate the registration of tidal flats in Korea at Sinan County office and unveiled future plans to preserve, manage, and utilize the tide flats.
The four tidal flat areas that have entered as a natural heritage site, includes Seocheon in South Chungcheong Province, Gochang, Sinan, Boseong and Suncheon in South and North Jeolla Provinces. A World Heritage Site must be considered to have "outstanding universal value" as both a cultural and natural heritage.
The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to proceed with registering nine additional tidal flats in accordance with the World Heritage Committee's recommendations. While the exact locations of the additional registered areas have not been decided yet, Goheung County and Yeosu city in South Jeolla province are positively being reviewed.
In order to officially inscribe the tidal flats, Seoul will conduct basic research on the areas and fill out an application to submit to UNESCO by 2023.
The following year, when the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) conducts a thorough inspection, the inscription will be decided by the World Heritage Committee in 2025.
In 2018, the Geomunoreum lava tube system was included in Korea's only natural heritage under the name "Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes." However, Korea has not succeeded in adding a new heritage element other than expanding the area.
Meanwhile, the Cultural Heritage Administration will showcase .programs such as the World Heritage Festival and World Heritage Media Art as well as produce websites and promotional materials to promote the value and beauty of tide flats.
