SEOUL, August 19 (Yonhap) -- A pair of lost fairypitta birds, designated as a natural monument by South Korean government, were rescued and sent back to nature in a healthy condition.

The pair of fairypitta birds were being protected by the Wild Life Rescue Center of the Gwangju Institute of Health and Environmental Research since the beginning of this month, and they were released on Friday, at Mudeungsan mountain.

The fairypitta birds were discovered on the first and third of August near a building in Hakdong and  Seoseokdong, Gwangju and were protected by the Wild Life Rescue Center.

Fairypittas are unique summer seasonal birds with feathers of eight different colors that shine like silk. They are designated as natural monument number 204 and are classed as endangered species II.

Since the start of the wildlife rescue center in 2019, 118 species, 1,985 animals were rescued and healed, and 631 animals have been released to nature.

Natural monuments such as otters, Siberian flying squirrels, Eurasian eagle owls, and leopard cats were among the 253 animals rescued, as were 20 endangered species.
