SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- The Black Widow
(played by Scarlett Johansson), who has made breakthroughs in each crisis with
her clear strategy and agile combat capabilities, reveals the secrets of her
past through the upcoming blockbuster film.
The movie "Black Widow" is the first solo movie released by Marvel
Studios after the 2019 "Avengers: Endgame" as well as one that
revolves around Black Widow. The film follows Black Widow's journey after the
disbandment of the Avengers and disclose the untold story that happened between
"Captain America: Civil War" and "Avengers: Infinity War"
within the MCU timeline.
The names of Black Widow and Natasha Romanoff first appeared in Marvel's 2010
movie "Iron Man 2." Since then, Black Widow has appeared in a total
of seven films, including "The Avengers" and the "Captain America"
series, however stories on her past have never been revealed. Although the
audiences know Black Widow as the deadly assassin with a checkered past, the
pieces of her mysterious past will be put together through the upcoming film.
"Black Widow" centers around Natasha's journey from being raised in
the "Red Room" as well as the characters who are disguised with
Natasha to look like an ordinary family. Romanoff's family includes actress
Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz's Melina Vostokoff, and actor David
Harbour's Alexei Shostokoff also known as Red Guardian.
All the characters are linked to the Red Room, a place where young girls are
trained as "Widows," who are basically elite killers and spies.
Widows are told to move at the behest of the founder of the Red Room,
regardless of their will. Natasha, who had buried the red room as a memory of her
long past, learns about the hidden conspiracy and reality through Yelena, who she
meets again in Budapest, Hungary and decides to launch a counterattack.
Natasha and Yelena, who do not have superpowers unlike the other heroes, raise
tension by wielding weapons or throwing objects to defend themselves while
avoiding obstacles in order to escape. Natasha and Yelena show off their chemistry
and sometimes bicker over small things in order to show their comical side.
Scarlett Johansson, who has played Natasha for more than a decade in Marvel
movies, exudes charisma by pouring out the energy she has accumulated over the
years. From skydiving to carrying out action scenes with her own body, Johansson
successfully fulfills Black Widow's character. In the upcoming movie, Johansson
leaves Black Widow's symbolic black suit and wears a white one to draw
attention.
As the movie is Black Widow's first solo movie, it is clear Marvel Studios had
put a considerable amount of effort in unraveling Natasha's past and embracing
her character while also including impressive action sequences. Yelena and the other
family members are new characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but are
key factors that complete Natasha's identity. Natasha finds another meaning for
the word "family" from the Avengers, which includes friendship and
comradeship.
The unanswered questions many Marvel fans have raised throughout the years such
as the source Natasha's vest she wears in "Avengers: Infinity War" or
why Natasha was called "Dreykov's daughter" will be revealed. There will
also be a post-credits scene that previews another story.
"Black Widow" will be released on July 7 and the movie is expected to
be 134 minutes long.
