Labor minister fined by court for violating COVID-19-related gathering ban

SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Yonhap) -- A court of appeals on Tuesday found Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo guilty of violating a COVID-19-related ban on on-site church services in 2020, overturning his acquittal by a lower court.

The appellate division of the Seoul Northern District Court sentenced Kim to a fine of 2.5 million won (US$1,860) for attending on-site worship services three times at Sarang Jeil Church in northern Seoul in 2020 in violation of the infectious disease control law.

At that time, social gatherings were banned at public facilities, including on-site church services, to help stem the spread of the pandemic.

The same court also fined about 10 members of the church, including a pastor, 1 million won to 3 million won each on the same charges. Kim and the church members were all acquitted by a district court in November 2022.
