LOS ANGELES, July 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung, who won Supporting Actress in April for film ‘Minari’, has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the most prestigious organization in the film industry.
The AMPAS, which holds the annual Academy Awards, officially announced that it had invited 395 artists and executives to join as new members this year. If Youn accepts her invitation, she will be eligible to vote for the Academy Awards in future years.
‘Minari’ star Steven Yeun and director Lee Isaac Chung were also included in the list.
Last year, the Academy invited a number of actors and staff members of the South Korean film ‘Parasite’, which won four Oscars.
Director Bong Joon-ho and actor Song Kang-ho had already become members in 2015.
Among the newly-invited members this year, 46% are women and 53% are foreigners outside of the U.S.
The number of Academy members last year was 9,362. Assuming that all the invitations are accepted this year, the total number of members will increase to 9,750.
For the past five years, the Academy has been active in expanding its diversity of members.
