PPP leader vows to downsize National Assembly to 250 seats after election victory

SEOUL/INCHEON, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) -- The leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) on Tuesday proposed reducing the number of lawmakers from 300 to 250 as part of political reforms, vowing to pass the proposal through the National Assembly after winning April's parliamentary elections.

"The PPP will first initiate and pass the law revision ... after achieving victory in the upcoming general election," Han Dong-hoon, chairman of the PPP's emergency committee, said during the party's New Year's greeting meeting in Incheon, west of Seoul.

Han made the pledge as part of his political reform measures aimed at helping his party take back the parliamentary majority from the main opposition Democratic Party (DP). He previously proposed measures such as giving up immunity from arrest for lawmakers.

"The number of parliament seats will be reduced to 250 in April only if the DP does not oppose," Han said.

The parliament currently consists of 253 directly contested seats and 47 proportional representation slots.
