China has largest number of Hallyu club members

SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- The country with the largest number of Hallyu club members has been confirmed to be China, accounting for 55% of the total number of membership. The United States and Thailand placed second and third each with ratios of around 10%.

According to the Korea Foundation for International Affairs on Wednesday, 2021 Global Hallyu Status Analysis Report published in last March shows that there are 1,470 global Hallyu clubs as of 2021, and the total number of members is 156.6 million.

Looking at the number of Hallyu club members in 108 countries, China accounted for 86.32 million, which is 55% of the total.United States followed with 16.69 million (10.7%); Thailand 14.8 million (9.5%); Russia with 5,698,000 (3.6%); Argentina with 4.286,000 (2.7%),; Vietnam with 4.123,000 (2.6%).

Rankings up to 15th such as Taiwan, Canada, Brazil, India, the Philippines, Peru, Malaysia, Chile showed the number of members between 1 and 2 million. The number of members in Japan stood at 343,000, placing 27th.

By continent, Northeast Asia where China belongs accounted for more than half with 56.8%. Southeast Asia followed by 15.6%, North America 11.9%,and Eurasia 4%. The Middle East, Western Europe, Central Europe, and Central America and the Caribbean are all around 1%. Members in Southwest Asia, Oceania and Africa each accounted for less than 1%.

Equatorial Guinea in mid-western Africa has been as a country with no members.

According to the report, Hallyu sensation, which started in Northeast Asia such as China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and expanded to Southeast Asia such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, has spread to the world including Central Asia, Southwest Asia, Europe, North America, and South America since few years ago thanks to the social media.
