SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Yonhap) -- Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women’s University has shed light on the contribution the Korean-independence activist Ahn Jung-geun and his family had to Korea’s independence from Japanese colonialism. The dramatic life of this independence fighter and his family has been brought under the spotlight once again by actors Jung Sung-hwa and Bae Jung-nam, who starred in the home-grown musical film “Hero” which also depicted the life of Ahn.
Professor Seo made an announcement on his social media account on Tuesday, saying, “Actor Jung Sung-hwa, who plays Ahn Jung-geun in “Hero,” and Bae Jung-nam, who plays another activist Cho Do-sun, have joined in to take a part in this Korean history knowledge campaign.”
Along with a six-page card news, Seo delivered the story of Ahn and his family and their contribution to the independence movement.
According to the information he shared, Ahn’s mother, Cho Maria, served as an executive of the Provisional Government Economic Support Association, and her younger sister, Ahn Sung-nyeo, was in charge of delivering confidential documents and funds for the independence fighters.
His younger brother Ahn Jeong-geun served as a member of the Provisional Assembly of the Provisional Government, while his other brother Ahn Gong-geun organized the Korean Patriotic Corps and Korean National Party.
Ahn Myung-geun, who is known to be Ahn’s cousin, campaigned for independence in China, while Ahn Kyung-geun, his other cousin, served as an aide to Kim Gu, one of the leaders in the Korean Provisional Government who fought for Korean independence, especially during the World War II.
Professor Seo emphasized that “everyone may have grown aware of Ahn Jung-geun’s activities and his contribution to our independence. However, many are unaware of his family, which serves as the main objective of this campaign.”
The professor will be sharing these pages of card news with major Korean and international student committees around the world.
