SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) – A 2022 South Korean musical drama film “Hero,” which recounts the history of a Korean independence activist An Jung-geun, has surpassed 2 million cumulative audiences on the 18th day of its release, according to the distributor CJ ENM.
As Korea’s first original musical film, “Hero” attracted an additional 1 million moviegoers in 10 days after it had exceeded 1 million cumulative audiences on Dec. 28, the eighth day of its release.
Considering how its production cost was about 13.9 billion won, the movie’s break-even point is estimated to be in the mid-3 million range.
Since its release on the 21st of last month, “Hero” has been continuing its hot streak as No.2 at the box office chart, following the Hollywood masterpiece “Avatar: The Way of Water” at the forefront.
The movie then slid to No.4 last Wednesday as an array of animated films entered the box office, including “The First Slam Dunk” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish”; however, “Hero” quickly regained second place the next day.
Directed by Yoon Je-kyoon, “Hero” is an adaptation of a hit stage musical of the same name, depicting about a year from the moment An Jung-geun, played by Jung Sung-hwa, assassinates Ito Hirobumi to his death.
