SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korean rookie monster girl group LE SSERAFIM has topped the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart with the group’s Japanese debut single “FEARLESS,” the band’s agency Source Music announced Tuesday.

This is the first time in five years and three months for an overseas female single to top the Oricon Singles Chart -- the Japanese music industry-standard singles popularity chart issued daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly by Oricon -- with the artist’s debut album.

“FEARLESS” sold 222,000 copies only in the first week of its release, breaking the previous record IZ*ONE set in the sales category of the first week of a K-pop girl group’s debut Japanese single. For Sakura and Kim Chae-won, the two members of LE SSERAFIM who made their debut as former members of IZ*ONE, this would be them breaking their own personal records with a new track in a new group.

LE SSERAFIM said, “We are so delighted and thrilled to achieve such an unexpected accomplishment,” adding, “We would like to express our gratitude to our fans for their all-time warm support. We will make sure to continue to put our utmost effort in our performances and music.”

LE SSERAFIM consists of five members: Sakura, Kim Chae-won, Huh Yun-jin, Kazuha, and Hong Eun-chae.
