SEOUL, June 20 (Yonhap) -- The fantasy action movie “The Witch: Part 2- The Other One” surpassed the 10 million movie “The RoundUp” and became the top of the box office on the first weekend of its release.
According to the KOREAN FILM COUNCIL on Monday, “The Witch: Part 2- The Other One” took the top spot at the box office by collecting over 1,009,000 spectators (48.4% of sales) over three days (17-19) last weekend.
“The Witch: Part 2- The Other One”, which was released on June 15 mobilized a cumulative audience of 1,458,000 until June 19, and took the second place in the box office among domestic movies released this year in just 5 days after its release. The cumulative audience for the first movie was 3.18 million.
With the success of “The Witch: Part 2- The Other One,” “The RoundUp” fell to #2 at the weekend box office for the first time since its release.
Although the monopoly that lasted for about a month has come to an end, it has continued to show its back spirit by mobilizing an additional 551,000 viewers (26.7% of sales) on the weekends. By Sunday, the 33rd day of its release, the cumulative number of audiences for “The RoundUp” was about 11.46 million, beating “Tidal Wave'' (about 11,453,000) and ranked 20th at the domestic box office.
Meanwhile, Pixar's animated “Lightyear,” which was released on the same day as “The Witch: Part 2- The Other One,” mobilized 158,740 spectators (7.8% share of sales) over the weekend and became the third place.
“Broker,” starring Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, and Lee Ji-eun, had won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. However, with 158,449 weekend audiences (7.5% of sales), it came in fourth place, going two steps down compared to last week.
The movie “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is gaining attention with main characters like Tom Cruise visiting South Korea, was ranked 6th by collecting 58,000 spectators (3.0% share of sales) last weekend only with its test screening before its release on the 22nd.
